He’d also doodled an ogre on the bottom. Saul pocketed the note, picked up the coffee cup and headed for his truck. Glancing toward the bay door, he saw Lee looking at him. Saul raised his travel mug in salute and gave him a wave before climbing in his truck and pulling away.

The trip to work passed in a haze of happiness as he thought about the night before and the start to his day. He lowered a hand to his pocket to make sure his drawing treasure was still there. He couldn’t wait to hang it on his monitor at work. It would definitely make him smile whenever he saw it. He needed to get a picture of Lee for his desk too.

Shaking his head at his sappiness, he parked his truck in his assigned parking space at the store. Walking toward the new office building for the meeting with the construction supervisor, Saul ran into Eric on the sidewalk. The normally laid-back man looked pissed off and worn.

“What’s up? You look like you’re ready to kill someone.”

“Just had an emergency meeting with the principal at Sam and Claire’s school.”

“What did the principal have to say?”

“Oh, he said all the right things. He was just as shocked as we were. ‘Were we sure? Didn’t sound like Mrs. Jackson.’ Etcetera, etcetera. It went south when he pulled Mrs. Jackson into the meeting. That woman is just vile. She started spouting off about Christian values and how the country has just gone downhill and allowing two men to get married is just wrong. The principal looked absolutely shocked, then he told Mrs. Jackson to go to the conference room and wait for him there. After she left, he told us that he had to follow policy as far as disciplining her was concerned, but they were an inclusive school and did not share her opinion, blah, blah, blah. In the meantime, he said he could at least move Sam to a different classroom. Since Claire and Sam live in the same house, they don’t normally recommend they be put in the same one, but Kirk and I kind of insisted.”

“Yeah, probably a good idea. Those girls are tight, and they have a lot of changes coming up.”

“Right?” Eric sighed and rubbed his temples. “The principal didn’t want to make a big deal about it, so he asked if they could just have Sam switch classes tomorrow. He said that Mrs. Jackson would not be returning today. I kind of took that to mean she was going to be suspended pending an investigation, but who knows how it works.”

“Well, Sam will be happy to be in the same class as Claire. Claire loves her teacher, right?”

“Yeah. Mr. Hines is a great teacher—and very liberal, if the rainbow bumper sticker on his car is any indication.”

“Well, that’s good.”

“Yeah. Kirk and I are debating whether we should put them in a private school, but Kirk wants to give them a chance to make it right.
